Transparency and Engagement Starts with Listening

Residents deserve to hear about decisions while they still have a chance to help shape them. I want more opportunities to speak at council meetings, clearer and earlier communication, and regular “Coffee with Council” conversations. We may not always agree, but your concerns should be heard and the reasons behind decisions should be explained.

Encampments: Practical Steps Toward Longer-Term Solutions

A dedicated encampment site, a voluntary return program and coordinated support could offer practical short-term steps toward a safer community. Here’s how I would approach those measures while working toward longer-term housing and treatment options.

Property Taxes and Budget Spending

Powell River can’t continue to rely on substantial property tax increases to replace lost revenue following the mill closure. We need careful review of municipal spending, clear priorities, and a realistic long term financial plan.

Development That Meets Our Community’s Needs

Recreation Matters. Supporting the Proposed Pickleball Facility

I fully support giving the qathet Pickleball Association a clear path forward for its proposed facility at the Recreation Complex.

The association proposes to fully fund the facility itself, already has some financial backing and is asking to lease City land. Having seen the proposed location, I firmly believe it would not interfere with a future expansion or rebuild of the Complex so I don’t see a reason to make them wait for the Recreation Services Master Plan to be developed.

Recreation matters, especially opportunities for seniors to stay active, build friendships and remain connected to our community. Let’s work through the requirements and help this project move forward.

Community Identity and the Possible City Name Change

The proposed name change carries deep and personal meaning for people on both sides. For some it’s a constant reminder of Israel Powell and a dark part of our history. For others the name Powell River is a tie to memories of families that have lived here for generations. A name that to them simply means “home”.

A change in name will shape our community’s future for generations to come, and that decision shouldn’t be made by council alone.

There needs to be lengthy respectful discussion, and not only do residents need to have a meaningful voice in the decision, but the decision needs to be made by the people as a whole. As councillor I will encourage these discussions and support the outcome chosen by voters.
