Priorities

There are many more challenges facing the people of Powell River,
but these are some of the priorities I believe will have the greatest impact on our community

I’ll continue sharing more details and ideas through my “Issues & Ideas” blog.

Supportive Housing, Homelessness and Community Safety

People deserve meaningful help, but community safety also matters. Housing alone is not going to solve the issue, and housing those actively abusing substances with those who are not is a recipe for failure.

When an approach is not producing the results it was intended to, we need to be honest about it and make changes before expanding or repeating it.

Property Taxes
and Budget Spending

Powell River can’t continue to rely on substantial property tax increases to replace lost revenue following the mill closure. We need careful review of municipal spending, clear priorities, and a realistic long-term financial plan

Economic Development
and Powell River’s Future

Powell River cannot build a sustainable future by continuing to place a growing tax burden on existing residents. We need to protect what makes this community special while creating responsible opportunities for investment, employment and growth.

Housing Affordability
and Responsible Growth

Powell River needs more housing options, a more efficient permitting process and flexible zoning that supports responsible development. By encouraging appropriate growth and broadening the tax base, we can improve housing affordability while reducing the financial burden placed on existing homeowners.

Infrastructure and Essential Services

The infrastructure and services residents depend on must take higher priority. Careful planning, preventative maintenance and responsible investment can reduce long-term costs while ensuring future taxpayers are not left with an unmanageable burden.

Our Ferry Services

As residents of an isolated community, we rely on the ferries as an essential part of our highway system.

A certain amount of reservations are essential to allow people to plan ahead, but not everyone has that option. A reasonable portion of each sailing must remain available for drive-up traffic with priority loading for those travelling for medical care or other essential purposes.

While a larger reservation system may make planning easier for BC Ferries and tourists, the harm it causes those who depend on it can’t be ignored.

Community Identity and the Possible City Name Change

The proposed name change carries deep and personal meaning for people on both sides. For some it’s a constant reminder of Israel Powell and a dark part of our history. For others the name Powell River is a tie to memories of families that have lived here for generations. A name that to them simply means “home”.

A change in name will shape our community’s future for generations to come, and that decision shouldn’t be made by council alone.

There needs to be lengthy respectful discussion, and not only do residents need to have a meaningful voice in the decision, but the decision needs to be made by the people as a whole. As councillor I will encourage these discussions and support the outcome chosen by voters.

Transparency
and Public Engagement

Residents should receive clear information, have meaningful opportunities to participate, and know that their concerns are being genuinely considered. Ignoring public outcry should not be the standard for a functioning, effective council.

Recreation, Parks and Quality of Life

Powell River’s parks and outdoor spaces should remain safe, welcoming and available for the whole community. Our parks should remain safe places for families and there should be more support for the community to expand and create locations for recreational pursuits
